Intro AARPReturn to index of stories... |
The Medicare Bill was the HOT topic on the campaign trail this week. as the powerful A-A-R-P endorsed the Medicare Bill. The Republican-backed measure creates a new prescription drug benefit -- and encourages insurance companies to offer private health coverage for elderly Americans. At Tuesday's A-A-R-P political forum in Bedford -- 6 of the 9 Democratic presidential candidates SCOLDED the organization, which represents Americans aged 50 or older. The bill is a boost to the G-O-P and President Bush who announced his support for the measure on Monday. |

Seniors are a critical voting bloc -- and Democrats are loath to hand President Bush a legislative VICTORY less than a year before the election. Q Edith-- Polls indicate health care and the economy matter most to older voters. is that reflected in the North Country? Q James how badly would passage of this bill HURT democratic candidates who are against it. |
Other Pres PoliticsReturn to index of stories... |
It's interesting to note that today is the last day for Primary filing--as yet no word of any more defectors. According to the latest UNH-WMUR Poll -- Howard Dean TOPs the pack with 38 percent of the vote -- John Kerry is a distant second with 16-percent of the vote. Q Former Gov and Presidential Candidate Mike Dukakis was in Durham this week -- he says he doesn't think losing in New Hampshire will mean the end for John Kerry's presidential bid. Front-runner status, he says, is created by the media. President Bush is starting to air tv ads --The GOP worries his popularity has been eroded by months of attacks. Economy is improving. How strong is Pres Bush's support in NH? |
Same Sex MarriageReturn to index of stories... |
This week we saw a landmark ruling out of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. The court says denying same-sex couples the right to marry violates the state constitution. Some believe -- we could see a domino affect with other states following suit. Q Edith. What's your read on this one. Is New Hampshire poised to follow in the steps of MA |
Bob Smith Running?Return to index of stories... |
Another familiar name popping up in the news this week. Former U-S Senator Bob Smith. He's apparently thinking about a run for the U-S Senate seat in Florida -- which is now his new home-state. Smith was a fixture in New Hampshire politics for close to 2 decades. He served 6-years in Congress and 12 years in the Senate. He lost his Senate seat to John Sununu in the last election. Smith is looking to fill Senator Bob Graham's seat --who announced he was retiring from the Senate after dropping out of the presidential race. Q Smith says he has a lot of support -- and offers to raise money for a campaign. While he's been a high-profile politician -- he's still an unknown commodity in Florida. Are we likely to see a SMITH candidacy -- and what would you say his chances are? |
Health & Human SvcsReturn to index of stories... |
A plan to CUT 20-Million from the state's Department of Health and Human Services got the green light this week. Money for alcohol and drug prevention will be cut, Medicaid reimbursements CAPPED, and 3OO jobs will go unfilled. The New Commissioner, John Stephens decided where the budget axe would fall. But, Senator Dick Green of Rochester wants to look at alternatives. He broke ranks with the Republican leadership and voted AGAINST the proposal. Q COLIN, Is this posturing on Sen Green's part -- or, are we starting to see some disenchantment with the new Commisioner? QThese cutbacks were in the state operating budget.everyone knew they were coming -- just not where -- That was decided by the commissioner. Is that generally how its done.cuts -- decided by the department head or commissioner? |
PC ConnectionReturn to index of stories... |
This week in Business-- We learned that Merrimack-based P-C Connection was in hot water. The leading seller of computers and software recently LOST a federal contract-- and now has "defaulted" on some credit agreements. q Karen, you've been following the story. What's going on?? Q What are the implications for New Hampshire employees? |
Intro Kucinich Up"Date"Return to index of stories... |
AND finally.we want to bring you an update on the search for a MRS KUCINICH. Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinch is the only bachelor in the race. and at a recent forum issued a challenge, of sorts. |
Kucinich Web VideoReturn to index of stories... |
PoliticsNH.com -- is playing match-maker. And, this being politics --POLLING is being used to narrow the field on the web-site. Its the first ballot test of the 2004 presidential campaign. And, I understand Dennis Kucinch has agreed to have dinner with the winner of the contest. Q James -- Can you give us an idea of who's applying? Q good response then? q When can we see a winner? |

Benson/Trans. PlanReturn to index of stories... |
Just this week -- the Transportation Commissioner announced -- the state has NO MONEY. Carol Murray says.New Hampshire is seriously broke to the point where ALL projects had to moved out in the future. For the Seacoast -- that means the expansion of the Little Bay Bridges won't be completed until 2-thousand-10. 2 years behind schedule. And, amid much suprise, Governor Benson has "shelved" a project in his hometown of Rye. He called a plan to reconfigure an intersection and install a traffic signal TOO EXPENSIVE. The problem is-- the contract had already been awarded. Q COLIN, State officials are asking. What's going on? what is going on? q From a Business Perspective is that kosher to pull a project after its been awarded? |
